Process sketches

4-29-09

Greetings,

Here are some preliminary sketches for an art contest over at Artorder. I feel like they mark an important step in my quest for developing a personal working process. Something I feel should have received more attention while I was at school.

Also, to further enhance my....nomadic-ness?....I'm taking a weekend trip to Sarasota FL, starting tonight to check out the senior Illustration show on Friday. Exciting stuff!! I'm stoked to see everyone's work, and catch up with all the teachers/friends/beaches/karaoke dives etc I left behind on the sunny gulf coast!

Thanks for dropping in,

OPW-One Page Weeklies!!!

4-27-09

Hey folks,

I've been swooning over comic books (again) recently. After a few catastrophic attempts jumping into the deep end I decided that my skills as a sequential storyteller were laughable at best. So, I'm scheduling in some weekly practice, with an excercise I am dubbing 'One Page Weeklies' (OPW)

The idea is to practice comics, and stop myself from being an idiot when I say things like "oh yeah, I LUUV comics.....what was that?....uh, no...I have never actually done one".

Every week on Monday I will be posting a single page of comic...trying to keep the following in mind.

Objectives:

1. Attain a level of sequential storytelling competency
2. Experiment with the medium
3. Improve poor grammar
4. Develop a skill set to apply to larger comic projects
5. Have some of that 'fun' you've been hearing about

I'm interested to see what kind of storytelling I can pull off in just one page.
..Also, these will help regulate the posting on here.

So here is the first installment of what will be growing weekly!!

The Lonely Outpost

4-25-09

hey guys,

I finally got around to finishing this piece from a post way back. I did the ink version in the middle of the painted one to loosen some hinges, and experiment with the image. I'm trying to incorporate fantasy subject matter in a subtle way, but I don't feel like I quite have it down yet....uggh :(

There are some differences compositionally between the two. I'm thinking the ink one is more successful, but I'd love to hear what ya'll think!?

another venture from the visual journal

Hey guys,

I've moved to Dallas for the week, to work on the book at ReelFX with some of the talented people over here. I'm starting to feel like a gypsy, roaming from Austin, to Shreveport, and now Dallas. I think George Carlin had a joke about it....something about having belongings in a bunch of different places at once. Regardless, it's made for an interesting past few months. I have been posting sluggishly, because I haven't come up for air in a while, but here are some recent sketchbook pages. I hope ya'll like um....!?!??

Hey folks,

I arrived back from Dallas inspired. We stumbled into some exciting stuff there, and it was great to get some of the old crew back together for a weekend.....(there was less scotch involved than I had hoped, but oh well)

I don't feel like either of these sketches are "finished", but I'd like to chronicle their progress so I am gonna post them now, and then again when they are "done". More and more often I open my sketchbook intending to start a drawing, and then spend hours adding frosting to an old one. I feel like if my sketchbook had a timeline it would look something like this---->

I like layering things on top of each other, and seeing what happens when I reuse old imagery.

I'd also like to add how incredibly impressed I am by the artists I graduated school with. Everyone has made incredible strides individually, so a huge shout out to all you recent Ringling alums. I am REALLY blown away by what everyone is producing on a daily basis. It's really kept me in check, thanks.

...and thanks for your time,
-Tamte
